What is YNSA?
Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture
YNSA is an abbreviation of Yamamoto New Scalp Acupuncture. It was developed by the Japanese physician Dr. Toshikatsu Yamamoto and was first presented at the 25th Ryodoraku Congress held in Osaka in 1973. Extensive knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine is not essential to learn or practice YNSA. The method is relatively easy to acquire and can yield rapid, favorable results.

YNSA Journey
For ten years, Mr. Tomita served as head of the Oriental Medicine Department at a major medical hospital in Osaka, which had surgical and rehabilitation wards and daycare services and employed over 300 staff. He managed the outpatient clinic for intractable conditions. While treating post-stroke paralysis and Parkinson's disease patients daily, he felt the limits of conventional acupuncture alone and began exploring scalp acupuncture in depth. Before receiving direct instruction from Dr. Yamamoto, he had self-studied YNSA via books and DVDs and applied it to stroke and Parkinson's patients with limited results. After learning point-location and needling techniques under Dr. Yamamoto, immediate effects began to appear: patients who had seen no improvement for six months were able to raise their arms on the spot. From the very next day, outcomes improved markedly.
The Founder
Dr. Toshikatsu Yamamoto
1929–2026, Miyazaki, Japan
Dr. Yamamoto graduated from Nippon Medical School in 1956. He completed a two-year anesthesiology residency at St. Luke's Hospital in New York, where he met his future wife, Helen, a nurse. He then moved to Germany, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology at Cologne University Hospital.
Returning to Japan in 1966 after ten years abroad, he opened a small clinic in Miyazaki — which he jokingly called a "little hut" — specializing in obstetrics, gynecology, and pain. It was here that he developed the revolutionary scalp acupuncture system that would bear his name.
Dr. Toshikatsu Yamamoto treated over 1.5 million patients over his career and retired from practice at age 94. He sadly passed away on January 20th, 2026. His final wish: "Help those in need in the world through YNSA."
